A Christian reviewer objects…

To my portrayal of some religious characters who are transphobic, in my book, Becoming Eleanor: A Transgender Tale, feeling it is unfair to Christians generally.

I would note two things: a great many Christian churches are indeed transphobic as a matter of dogma. It is hardly unfair to make my characters realistically reflect a prejudice that is so blatantly part of many churches.

But secondly, my heroine finds great solace at a Christian church in the story and is welcomed by the pastor there. So I do find it an unfair criticism to suggest my book is unfair or unrealistic in that regard.

I’m not religious myself but I know trans women who are and who have been welcomed at their church so I appreciate that not all churches are so benighted in their views—but a great many of them have sadly gone out of their way to vent prejudice and hate speech against trans folks, so I stand by what I wrote.
